More fish Drama

yesterday after I woke up, i cleaned my house, made a carrot cake and ran a few errands to buy fish food, ask a few questions about a few things and buy one last yard of blue fabric for the never ending Linda's quilt. I gave her the front so she can put her pictures on it while I made the border. I figured it would take me a while to make that, but i got it all done and now all i have to do is put it on the quilt.

Anyway, I bought a new kind of fish food, some water rocks that will produce oxygen while we are gone and a feeding stone for when we are gone. I am gonna have to turn off the pump when we go to vegas cus the water disappears so fast when it runs. we have to fill it almost every other day cus it is so hot here. Its just evaporating that fast or there is some kind of leak I cant find. Anyway, when i got home, i gave the fish a small handful of the new food, to see if they liked it. yes, they did start eating it. I guess its not like dogs n cats, where they know they can break us down to give them something else. all was happy in the fish barrell.

I went back in, worked on the border, did a few things and and had a few beers. I had been pretty productive. once again, I went outside for a break. If i sit too long at the sewing machine, my back starts to ache so I get up and take a walk every few hours. the sun was high in the sky, the fountain was flowing good, and the fish were playing in the waterfall. suddenly, one of them jumps up out of the water, a good 5 or 6 inches. WOW! I wasnt expecting that, but what fun.

So later on, when I finished what i was doing, cleaned up and took one last trip outside before I started something else. one of the fish was laying on the ground right outside the barrell with flys on him. I didnt know if he was still alive, so I picked him up and put him back in the water and sorta massaged him like they do in the catch and release fishing shows. at first he was slow to start swimming, but he finally did and stayed at the bottom. I checked him several times until it got dark and he was still alive. I sure hope he lives. I know its only a goldfish, but he is my goldfish.

So now I think Im gonna try to figure out some way to cover the barrell with wire, making it with a curve. if these fish are gonna jump, i have to find a way to keep them in the water. right now im thinking the top to my outdoor fireplace thingy. it has a curved top. can you imagine how I was with my kids if this is how I act with a few fish????

  1. Totally, I bet the fish are jumping right out of the barrel....instead of out of the frying pan into the fire its out of the barrel and onto the ground! LMAO! I hope that is not just funny in my head!

Carrot cake hmmmm...Amber's licks lips and begins to daydream!

  2. you could put some screen material on the top. then the fish would get air and maybe not so much water would evaperate. Or you could set up an elaborate mechanical system that detects the fish jumping and catches them with a net and releases them back into the barrel.

  3. Jumping goldfish? Ok, I have never heard of that. lol. We have a goldfish that is six and a half years old. I had no idea goldfish lived so long! Hope you can figure out a way to keep them in the barrel. The wire mesh idea sounds good. Maybe you could find some netting to lay over the top. Like a minnow net or something? Hope you have a wonderful time on your trip!! Look forward to hearing about it when you get back! :)
