I cant think of anything that was my favorite outfit or piece of clothing. I hate clothes shopping. As long as the clothes that I am wearing are comfortable, I’m good. I recently bought a pair of new balance walking shoes and I really like them. I can walk all day in these, then walk some more at night, and my feet don’t hurt that much. There isn’t much in my closet or drawers that is special to me.
I was about to call this finished. Then, I was looking in my closet for something, and I came across a dress I bought with my mom to wear to my brothers summer wedding. I didn’t want to buy it at first. It was strapless, tight fitting, rather risqué and something I would never wear. Mom talked me into trying it on. She was trying on a strapless long dress, breezy and summery. She was going to have fun, because she liked to have fun. I did too, but didn’t feel I could wear that dress.
I did try it on, and it fit perfectly. I looked at the price, and it was $240.00. Yes folks, you read that right. It was on sale for some percent off and then some more. I cant remember exactly how much. I ended up paying somewhere around $60.00 for this dress. As it hung in my closet, waiting for the wedding date, I lost weight. My mom had to take it in for me. It fit like a glove and I looked hot! This dress gave me confidence I had never had before.
I wore it another time to a company Christmas party. I still looked hot. And so this red silk, strapless dress still hangs in the back of my closet. I cant fit into it. I have more than a few pounds to go until I can fit into it again. But I will keep it. it’s a beautiful dress. It represents the beginning of strength and confidence for me. Every time I see it, I think back to that time in the department store when I was told I looked good and I should buy it buy the one person who meant the most to me, my mom.
I felt like that the first time I could buy smaller jeans! Keep them for a long time too. Finally gave them to people who could use them. But, that doesn't mean I'm giving up!
ReplyDeleteOK -so you have me crying. I'm very grateful that you are willing to share pieces of your past with us like this. Like you say - it wasn't the dress itself.....it's the hot woman inside that was allowed to come out by the dress.......Red is probably a great color for you - so if you don't have lots of it in your wardrobe now - you should drag yourself out shopping and get some.
ReplyDeleteI like that suit I got for my birthday. I like my birthday suit. It always fits, although after a heavy meal, it does fit snug around the middle. LOL
ReplyDeletelol! I'm glad you found one!! I think we all have one like that in our closet! Memories of yesteryear!
ReplyDeleteAw Em, why are you crying? this was a good thing. there are so many things that remind me of my mom, and now I am happy for it. I still cry too. I am searching for a picture of me in the dress. In the mean time, i found a bunch of other cool shots i forgot about. Im gonna scan them and put them in an album. I will continue to search for ther red dress pictures.
ReplyDeleteMy B-day suit fits the same way. I need to find a smaller size though. it feels so much better.
ReplyDeleteHappy crying - not sad, dear.......looking forward to the pics.....
ReplyDeleteSo I see no one is following Lisa's instructions and recalling a favourite outfit or shoes....j/k
ReplyDeletewell when I was alot younger like maybe 30 + years ago I had a 'Snoopy' sweatshirt. I wore that thing for years and years and then one day it was just gone. poof, disappeared, I asked my mom where's my 'Snoopy' sweatshirt? She said and I quote " oh! that old thing, I tore it up for rags"
What a nice tribute to your mom, Lisa. That was lovely!
ReplyDeleteWell, I am actually wearing my favorite piece of clothing! It's my night dress. Its the one I wore when I was in hospital after giving birth to Brandon. It has a big mini mouse on it! You might remeber seeing it during our webcaming sessions! LOL! As soon as I get home from work I put it on. I wear it no matter what I am doing....I have cleaned in it, cooked in it, gardened in it, mowed the lawn in it, painted in it, but mostly relax in it. It has been sewn many times. It it beginning to get thread bear and has many stains on it. I know I am not painting a very pretty picture here but t is just wonderful. Its just a piece of clothing but to me it invokes the feeling of freedom from work clothes and the signalling of the end of the day. Okay, so not as touching as your storey but its the best I got!
LOLOLOL....hmmmmmm....thats one way of handling it! Zachery had a security blanket as a toddler and he wouldnt let go of it. So each time I washed it I would cut some off it. One day it just was too small and he didnt want it anymore. I dont think the ole...I cut it up for rags.....routine would have worked for me!

ReplyDeleteIm a bit late on this one..but oh well. lol
ReplyDeleteWhen I was a little girl I had this red dress that I fell in love with and HAD to have..but mom said we couldnt afford it. I was heart broken to say the least...well, a couple weeks later it was Christmas and God only knows how...but when my mom and I went to get intot he locked car to go to my aunts house, there was a box sitting on the front seat...it had the red dress in it!! To this day we dont know how it got there. I will never forget that dress as long as I live.
Today, I am not sure if I have a fav. or not. I do love my wedding dress tho...it is silver silk with scottish thistles embrodried on the bodice. I wore it for my wedding and then a month later was able to wear it to my oldest daughters wedding...her colors were blue and silver also...her mom and mom in law wore blue and I wore silver. I got soo many compliments on the dress..I felt wonderful! (Just had 2 surgeris, so I didnt feel so "hot"...but the compliments helped. lol)
Better late then never!
